I watched the first season before reading the books and I get you. I mean it was obviously very blatant in the show so I was expecting it in the books and then it just… didn’t happen. … I mean it’s obvious they were CLOSE, especially when you get to Sansa and him speaking and he basically just closes her off when she talks about Renly, but I don’t see how that really translates into a sexual or romantic relationship. Although I guess GRRM was involved in a lot to do with the show, so maybe he saw it between them but didn’t want it super blatant in the books. Also they were never written from the point of view of Renly or Loras so maybe that’s why?
I definitely agree—because none of the chapters were directly following them, perhaps we never got to see it head-on. I’d love to ask GRRM about it, one day, just for some perspective on the thing. I always knew they were super bros, but it’s played up in the show to such an extent that simply never was in the books.

Same! I mean, it works in the show, but at the same time, I feel like their being together romantically (or sexually, because honestly it wasn’t very romantic) was more for shock value and trying to be current with the media… idk man idk
